Effective Ownership Calculator

Calculate a parent's effective economic interest in a subsidiary held through an intermediate entity — and the resulting Non-Controlling Interest. Real-time, no login required.

What is Effective Ownership?

When a parent holds a subsidiary indirectly — through one or more intermediate entities — the parent's effective economic interest is calculated by multiplying the ownership percentages down the chain.

Cascading Ownership

If Parent owns 80% of an intermediate holding company, and that holding company owns 70% of a subsidiary, the parent's effective economic interest in the subsidiary is 80% × 70% = 56%.

This matters for NCI measurement, dividend entitlements, and understanding the group's true economic exposure at each level.

Consolidation vs Effective Interest

For IFRS 10 consolidation purposes, control is assessed at each level — if Parent controls the intermediate (typically >50%), and the intermediate controls the subsidiary, the subsidiary is consolidated 100% into the group.

The effective ownership % tells you the parent's economic share — which drives NCI allocation and dividend economics, not the consolidation boundary itself.

⚠ Important notes on indirect ownership

This calculator assumes a simple two-level chain with no direct ownership by the parent in the subsidiary. In practice: (1) IFRS 10 control assessment considers voting rights, contractual arrangements, and de facto control — not just ownership percentage; (2) if the parent also holds a direct stake in the subsidiary, add the direct % to the effective % from this calculator; (3) in the consolidated financial statements, NCI is presented at each entity level separately — the 44% shown here represents the combined economic minority interest, not a single line item; (4) circular ownership structures require a different approach. Always confirm your group structure with a professional adviser.
